If you’ve never read Paul E. Cooley before, this is a great starter for you! It’s a short novelette that showcases what Paul does best, take an everyday guy with an everyday job, then take him on a left turn into weird.

Normally, I don’t give 5 star reviews, particularly for psychological horror. That looms large in my wheelhouse. I cut my teeth on Poe and Lovecraft, after all. I like my horror creepy, not just slashy. I have to tell you, this…this was creepy. I loved it! Continue reading Review: Mimes by Paul E. Cooley »

There is a great deal to like about this novel. It contains some of the usual techno-thriller ingredients: Nazis, esoteric science, the Yeti, and long, lost Tibet. If you were to judge it by those alone you might well say, “Meh.” However, it’s how these ingredients are mixed that gives this novel its unique flavor.

In 1938 Nazi scientists brave the Himalayas in search of the Master Race. They fail. Or do they? 75 years later the sole survivor puts together small team of four extraordinary scientists to retrace his steps and unlock the secrets of the next phase of human evolution.

I have mixed emotions about this novel. Parts of it are so very well done, that the parts that come up a little short are glaring.

This is not a hard (or even mild) science fiction story. You need to set your expectations from the start. _Into the Dark_ sets the stage as an epic space fantasy of operatic proportions. Once you wrap your mind around science-as-magic, this is a fast-paced, enjoyable read and, a wonderful introduction to Science Fiction for Middle-Grades to YA.

Review: Dawn’s Early Light

Affiliate LinkToday is the release day for Dawn’s Early Light, the third novel in the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series by Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris. This novel is a road trip!

In brief, Books and Braun are sent across the pond to consult with agents of The Office of the Supernatural and Metaphysical regarding a case of missing airships and run across my favorite set of villains, the House of Usher! From there a madcap adventure ensues, providing all the fun, gadgetry, and derring-do of the previous novels. There are cameos galore, the Ministry’s version of ‘Q-Branch,’ steam powered cars, pop culture Easter Eggs, and  a surprising twist at the end.

Saddle up, and be forewarned; spoilers abound!
